Description
Smoky, sweet, and spicy—this homemade chipotle barbecue sauce is a bold and flavorful addition to grilled chicken, veggies, and more.
Ingredients
⅔ cup ketchup
⅓ cup cider vinegar
¼ cup packed brown sugar
¼ cup honey
2 tablespoons finely minced chipotle in adobo
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon kosher salt
¼ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
Instructions
1. Add all the ingredients to a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook on low for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
2. Remove from heat and taste, adjust seasoning as desired.
3. Allow to cool at room temperature, then use immediately or refrigerate, covered, for up to 5 days.
4. To a zip-top bag or dish, add 2 pounds chicken with ¾ cups sauce; toss to coat.
5. Cover and marinate in the fridge for at least 30 minutes or up to 8 hours.
6. Discard marinade, grill chicken over medium heat to proper internal temp.
7. Let chicken rest 5–10 minutes before slicing and serving with extra sauce.
Notes
This recipe yields about 1 cup of BBQ sauce.
For a vegan version, use maple syrup instead of honey.
Great for chicken, pork, or roasted vegetables.
